Artist’s Statement - Jon Kathman
Jon is a self taught artist who never took an art lesson. “John Smith, Jr” is the first painting he ever painted. He learned his craft by watching his father work, and contributes his success to that, and what he calls the “Painting Gene”. Jon currently resides and paints in Portland, Oregon.
“John Smith, Jr”
Subject John Smith, Jr a wheelchair bound, double amputee, living alone, in a makeshift home, in Hattiesburg, Mississippi survived hurricane Katrina (2005). Mr. Smith survived a week with no running water or electricity. Kathman’s wife at the time, who took the photo of Smith, was a first responder to the Mississippi area. The painting was done by Kathman in recognition of the human spirit.
