Jack Dorsey Is Square
Jack Dorsey flew the coop of Twitterdom and landed with a thud on Square, a company he co-founded in 2009.
Dorsey promptly changed Square’s name to Block, Inc., was appointed Block Head and CEO, and started running with the Crypto crowd, just as Crypto ran amok of the Feds.
My people, Artists, Authors and Publishers, were among the first to embrace Square to help them sell their books and art. I remember sending Sharon Koskoff an article about Square’s first office building where every office, every space was Square. Sharon is an Architectural Aficionado so I thought she would appreciate the unique design.
Sharon enthusiastically thanked me for suggesting Square, the wonderful new payment system. Her book sales have doubled since she started using Square.
The Emerson House Art Gallery, which runs the $100 Store and the Virtual Art Gallery on dianefreaney.com, purchased a Square Reader in January 2022, but has yet to figure out how to make it work. Squarespace, my Website Builder, and Square don’t play well together so it seems I wasted my money ($52.19).
Now may be a good time to approach Chief Block Head Jack Dorsey with suggested changes that will work for small businesses.
Square is an Aggregator
My usual breakfast with Aunt D’s Diner in Stuart costs $10.00. Gloria, my server and house manager, adds sales tax, runs my card and brings back my card with a chit so I can leave a tip. Later Gloria has to reconcile the chits and put the tips through when she closes for the day. A lot of unnecessary work for an already understaffed Aunt D’s. Then Gloria has to remember to pay the sales tax and “do the payroll”, reconcile the cash to the order slips. I am a CPA and the paperwork boggles my mind.
A Simple Solution for Brick and Mortar Stores Like Aunt D’s Diner
Square POS - No Training Required
Really??
In Florida, businesses are gearing up for “The Season” - pretty much January through March. The hope is to hire enough staff so the Mom and Pop businesses can provide their usual excellent service to their customers. The hiring and training process started in September, the slowest month of the year. New hires can learn the culture from the old timers at a slow pace so they can hit the ground running in “The Season.”
Today’s business products must “add value,” and do it consistently. Square has become outdated as other apps have exploited niche markets. Chief Block Head has been chasing rainbows, leaving his long-time loyal customers to fend for themselves.
Take the Tools to mix and match below. Chief Block Head expects potential customers to figure out how to order stuff on Square’s very confusing website.
Instead Square salespersons need to visit brick and mortar locations, assess the needs of the operators and propose a solution where Square will “add value.” I cringe at Text Message Marketing and Email Marketing, two favorite of stupid politicians this election season.
Chief Block Head is not good at listening to customers, preferring to be driven by hedge funds.
Write to thecatlady@dianefreaney.com and I will pass your suggestions on to Chief Block Head.
